Larch , from the genus Larix, are deciduous trees native to the cooler regions of the northern hemisphere. Larch are known for their soft, needle-like leaves that change color in the fall and then dropping off the tree before winter.
Preferred soil conditions:
Moist, well drained organic soil types. Small amount of clay and sand acceptable. Although they are found near water and wetter locations, Larch will do their best with no standing water for lengths of time.
Mulch after planting and water as necessary for the first year and periods of drought thereafter.
Japanese Larch
(Larix kaempferi)
Native to Japan, Larix kaempferi is the Japanese Larch or "karamatsu" in Japanese. It loves the sun and has bright green needles on pendulous branches. Like all larches the needles turn to a beautiful golden yellow in the fall before falling off. The red-brown bark gives this tree a beautiful winter sillouette. The coloring, fullness and adaptability set this tree apart from our native Eastern Larch.
